Lyrics

LYRICS-

I'll be sitting in a part of my mind, thinking about the tragedy that took away my brothers life.
It just comes to show that life's really short, on this path that I'm running on my life is a dwarf.
I'm lost in a place no BBC4, feeling like a fed tryna break down a door.
Looking into shadows tryna find me a sign, I see the devil lurking looking deep in my eyes.

I find it hard to trust somebody broken like glass, I've had a terrible past tryna shine like a star.
I feel sorry for my soul because there's no love in my heart.
Getting lucky with these girls but I wont take a chance.
They tell me that I'm quiet like i don't wanna speak, I'm not saying that I'm rich but talk is very cheap.

So I'm sticking to my self I don't want no body else in my life.
Brothers that I chill with see the pain through my eyes and its real.

You don't wanna take a step in my shoes, land mines and bullets is the war I'm walking through.
Normally I'm rapping with a smile but these last couple weeks only forced me to change up my style.

Now I'm chilling in a dark cloud prince with a dark crown.
Always looking up cause the gravity cant pull me down.
Thinking were I'm gonna be in five years? Will I be seven foot down with my body in the fire screaming loud?

Goodwin & Vernallis Theory

Goodwin's Theory
Andrew Goodwin has identified a number of key features in music videos. They are:
· A relationship between the lyrics and the visuals, with the visuals illustrating, amplifying or contradicting the lyrics.
· Genre-related style and iconography present.
· Multiple close-ups of the main artist or vocalist.
· Voyeurism often plays a major part, especially in relation to females.
· Intersexual references to other media texts may be present.
He says that music videos are often constructed by the link between the visuals and the song plus the artist. Relationships are built between these in the video, and the close-ups of the artists gives them the representation and publicity they require. Voyeurism is used to increase the video’s attractiveness, particularly to males, whilst intertextuality is often employed in humorous videos.
Many of these features are present in all music videos, depending on the genre of the song and the aim of the record company/artist.
Vernallis Theory
Carol Vernallis studied editing and camera work in music videos , she has observed edit's in music videos and these are some of the points that she came up with :
· The usual rules of 'continuity ' editing are broken in order to draw attention to what is on screen
· Edits may be really obvious to draw attention to themselves such as wipes and special effects added
· jump cuts are often used
· a master shot base track is frequently used to give the video a structure
· The camera may move in time with the music.

Jason Derulo - Riding Solo Music Video Analysis

The video starts off with a long shot of Jason Derulo playing on the piano in a empty room. Then the audience see a close up of a frame of his girlfriend. The music at the beginning also links with what the audience are seeing; we can see Jason Derulo upset and heartbroken as he upset about the break up with his ex girlfriend.  As the slow piano music stops, there is a louder music which makes him put the picture of his ex girlfriend flat on the piano and looks at the brighter side of the break up. When he stands up and starts dancing which slow an indication of him being over her and happy being single. The lights at the background when he dances with different angles of the long shots of him emphasise his freedom.

The different shots of him in the mirror may emphasise that he's being seen at all angles, and is an interesting shot from an audience’s point of view. There a close up of his glasses, watch and key's, which suggest he is rich and wealthy, and suggest to the audience that he is going out. The different shot inside his car on the streets are used again to represent his freedom and shows how he rides solo, as he is driving fast down the streets alone.

As he enters the night club, the audiences see many attractive women dancing around. We get a close up of a girl who immediately shows interest in him. This emphasises the effect he has on the club and the effect of being single ‘riding solo’. As he walks past, we see two girls on a iPad and at the top it quotes “Plenty of Fish “which suggests that there are many other girls around, and its easy to move on.

Music analysis – Jay Sean Down Ft. Lil Wayne

The video that I am going to analyse using Goodwin’s points Jay Sean “Down” featuring Lil Wayne. The video starts off with a close up of a rose which is focused with the background blurred which immediately indicates romance. The spilling of the glass onto the rose suggests something has gone wrong in the relationship as we can see when Jay Sean tries comfort the lady. The blue tint in the video follows throughout the video to make the visuals stand out, this is due to because the video is less lightened at the background of the video as it is quite dark, but with the artist the lighting is well lit.

As the shot follows the glow effect carries on travelling from the light towards the ballroom to add a modern feel to the video. As the glow travels the audience can tell that the video is now set in a party scene. The people inside the ballroom are mostly wearing a dark/black clothing with bright white LED lights shining downwards which make these people stand out. As soon as the door opens Jay Sean is wearing a white shirt, the audience can quickly identify him as he stands out from the crowd.

The video uses colour to make references to the mood so when it changes from blue to pink it shows love supporting the narrative. Simple actions like Jay brushing off his jacket could indirectly be an attempt at him 'brushing' off the touch of other girls, and he is loyal for the one girl in particular.

The blue glow returns again when he find the girl he was looking for, and the colour of the scene change back to dark and blue which indicates the love of these two couples. When she walks away he follows her indicating he wants her even though there are other girls. The lyrics fit exactly with the actions he does.

During the video ‘Cash Money’ logo is projected on the walls inside the ballroom, this is a clever way to advertise the record label, as Jay Sean and Lil Wayne are both from the same label. As the video ends the audience see Jay Sean and Lil Wayne shake hands which shows us these two are also friends, not just colleagues from the same record label.
